Amy Kukulya is a marine robotics engineer, entrepreneur conservationist, and explorer who has spent more than two decades advancing autonomous underwater vehicles for ocean science, defense, and environmental protection. From Greenland’s ice to tropical reefs, she has led or participated in more than 100 oceanographic expeditions, building tools that help scientists and decision-makers understand a rapidly changing ocean.
As Founder and CEO of Scibotics LLC, Amy develops innovative ocean robotics solutions for offshore wind, oil spill response, marine mammal protection, and coastal resilience projects. She also serves as co-founder and president of Our Blue Horizons Inc, a nonprofit dedicated to ocean conservation and education, and she has created outreach platforms like Oceanrobotcam and TurtleCam to connect “curious humans with curious creatures.
Before launching Scibotics, Amy spent over 20 years at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where she became a recognized authority in the development and operations of autonomous underwater systems. She helped create and lead projects such as REMUS SharkCam and TurtleCam, pioneering technologies for tracking sharks, turtles, and other marine megafauna in three dimensions.
Her work has appeared on Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, National Geographic, PBS, and other major outlets, as well as in print and online science media. Amy has testified before the U.S. Senate on shark conservation and ocean technology, delivered talks for IMAX and museums, and thrown out a ceremonial first pitch for the Boston Red Sox in recognition of her contributions to marine science and outreach.
Amy is a Fellow of The Explorers Club and holds a U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license, blending technical expertise with hands-on field leadership. As an EngineerGirl Mentor, she is passionate about mentoring the next generation of ocean technologists and creating inclusive, real-world STEM experiences that show how robotics, creativity, and grit can work together for a healthier ocean. Her passion for inspiring and training the next generation of ocean leaders can be found at the nonprofit Our Blue Horizons, Inc.
